My family loves going out on outdoor adventures be it hiking, fishing on remote locations or camping. But the main problem that has always been bugging all of us is the lack of electricity. If you have been off the grid for a few days, it is always nice to find even small comforts.
To address this problem, I had to look for a generator that can help me and my family get critical backup. I had to choose between getting a light model and having a larger one that can accommodate my family’s needs. To help you with your search, here’s my Champion 4000 watt generator review.
Ideally, you should be buying the Champion 4000 watt generator if you are looking for a product that can provide you with enough electricity during power trips as well as during a power outage at home. You need to keep in mind that this generator is quite large and bulky and you need the energy and space to use it properly.
Although this is a portable generator, I do not recommend it for those that are planning to go on long hikes or those that need to pass through rough outdoor terrain. You might be able to bring this generator along with you on the truck or RV but it can be very hard to carry it by hand without help.
This generator is also not an inverter generator. This means that without inverter technology installed, this generator will have a power output that will constantly fluctuate. This also means that it will have to run at a constant speed, noise and consumption even though it is only being used for small appliances.
You should also consider the following:
The Champion 4000 watt generator is known to provide both power and reliability for its users. With its rated 3500 running watts as well as 4000 surge watts, this product is able to provide more than enough power for basic home and outdoor electronics as well as for large devices that you might need to use.
Ideal for use at home as a source of electricity during a power outage, it can also be used on camping trips especially if you are taking the RV or if you are going to bring your family along with you. For the outdoors, it can be used to power emergency devices and it can be used for lights or cooking appliances.
Since this generator is powerful enough to easily cater to the needs of different power tools, it can also be used for construction projects or for use on the job site. You can take this generator along with you just in case you need to use saws, drills, pumps and even air conditioners away from the power grid.
Since this generator is rated for 4000 surge watts, it can easily give you enough room to power up appliances that have a notoriously high wattage demands during starting. You need to understand that some refrigerators, heaters and tools will need twice the running watts in order to start properly.
With the help of its 3500 running watts, you can easily turn on all the lights at home, in your cabin, or in your tents. It can also be used to run basic home appliances such as the microwave oven, the television, a window type air conditioner, heaters, sump pumps and depending on its size, a centralized AC system.
This generator’s power output is basically ideal for use at home, for recreation as well as for work purposes. You can actually use a lot of electronic devices and appliances with the help of this generator for as long as the devices will not overload the unit and they are not too sensitive.
You need to keep in mind that this generator is not an inverter model. It does not have the capability to process the raw power it produces into smooth or clean electricity. This means that the generator is going to run at full power even if you are only going to use it to run small devices like a few lights.
This generator is powered by a 196 cc OHV engine that is encased in a cast iron sleeve. This allows the generator to easily produce the rater power output. OHV engines are commonly used in generators because these engine types are known to be longer lasting than the traditional engine types.
The cast iron sleeve allows the engine to have a solid build as well as ample protection. But I do think that it also adds a lot of weight to the product. The added weight can actually prevent you from being able to easily take the product to remote or inaccessible locations.
This generator has a dimension of 29 by 21 by 21. This makes it a bit bulkier than most generators especially if you are used to using small and lightweight ones. You will have to allocate some space for this generator if you want to store it inside the home or if you plan on bringing it with you in the RV.
As for its size, this generator actually weighs 140 pounds. This makes the product also quite heavy even for its class. But what makes this product very portable is the fact that it also features two 8-inch wheels as well as metal frames so you can transport the unit wherever it is needed.
This generator is able to hold as much as 3.8 gallons of fuel allowing you to use the generator for several hours depending on the load that you are going to use. It however, is rated to run for as long as 12 hours at 50% load, allowing you to easily use this product for powering devices overnight.
This generator runs on gasoline and it is not capable of running on other types of fuel. You should also know that while it is very affordable in some states, gasoline cannot be stored in large quantities at home. The gas you need to use for this unit should be new and it should have the correct octane score.
There are actually two Champion 4000 watt generators that have very similar features. However, depending on whether you got the 46539 or the 46515 model, you are going to get slightly add-ons. If you got the 46515 model, you will be able to get a remote that you can switch on at 80 feet.
The 46515 model is also compliant with the standards provided by the EPA carburetor guidelines. However, the 46539 generator is not CARB compliant and it cannot be sold in California. This model also does not have the wheel base. The 46539 model however, is much lighter since it only weighs 106 lbs.
The main issue that both of these units have is that the Champion brand is not that much recognized when it comes to durability. These generators also have a 3 – pronged outlet which are only ideal for use in the RV and not at home. There are also reports that these generators were delivered with defects.
This generator is a good alternative to the Champion model especially if you are looking for a more affordable alternative. The main differences that it has with the Champion generators are as follows:
This is also a good alternative for the Champion generator especially if you are looking to buy a product that can provide you with the same power output at a cheaper cost. The main differences include:
It can provide you with higher power output and is also a bit cheaper than the other generator. The other differences that it has with the Champion generator include:
The Champion 4000 watt generator is not just ideal for home use; you can also use it for outdoor recreational purposes as well as for work purposes. You need to understand that it is more than capable of providing you with a good amount of wattage to power a wide array of appliances.
This generator is also good enough to be used for overnight purposes; this is because it has a large fuel tank and can easily run for a straight 12 hours at 50% load. This makes it ideal for use during a power outage, or whenever you want to use the unit on the jobsite to finish your entire project.
While there are actually two Champion generator models that can both provide you with 3,500 running and 4000 surge watts, both of these units are both good enough for various purposes. The slight differences include the remote, wheel base and the EPA complaint carburetor for the 46515 model.
