Some Champion generators that are very hard to start might have problems with their air filter. If the air filter is blocked or is dirty, air cannot go inside the generator to burn the fuel properly. To fix this, use the user manual to locate the air filter. In most cases it can be found near the choke at the front side.
Put the generator on your work bench, lay out the clean rags and use the tools to open up the housing if it is necessary. Remove the air filter and try to replace it with a new one. Depending on the generator model, you might be able to do quick air filter cleaning to fix the problem.
Step 2: Check The Spark Plug Or The Batteries
If the air filter looks clean, the next thing that you will have to inspect is the spark plug. See if it still works by testing it. You can also try to check the spark plugs to see if it has any damage. You can try to clean the spark plug, but if it will still not work, you might need to put in a new one instead.
When installing a new spark plug, make sure that the wires are correctly installed as well. This will ensure that the generator will be able to start properly. If the model you have has an electronic starting system, you might want to check if you need to put in new batteries so that the unit can start properly.
Step 3: Check The Oil Level
In most cases, Champion generators have a low oil sensor that will prevent the generator from starting if the oil level in the unit is too low. You might want to check the indicator first and try to see the actual oil level in the crankcase. If the unit needs it, you can add more. Use the oil preferred by the manufacturer.
If there is enough oil but the sensor indicates otherwise, then the sensor might be the one having problems. You can locate it with the help of the manual or by tracing the yellow wire found on the crank case all the way to the green connector. Separate the two wires and try to start the generator again.
Step 4: Check The Fuel
If the fuel in the generator has degraded or if the fuel has been allowed to sit in the tank for more than three months, you will have to drain it properly. You need to make sure that you remove all the fuel in the tank before you try to add new fuel. Try to restart the generator.
Step 5: Other Factors That You Need To Consider
Generators will have difficulties starting when you try to operate it in low temperatures. To fix this problem, you can try to start it in a warm and well ventilated area. You can also replace the oil to make sure that its viscosity is ideal for the temperature. You should also check the choke and carburetor.
