While most households will always have an insecticide around just in case a roach or some other insect shows up inside the home, there are instances when homeowners can get caught off guard. If this happens, you will have to try and look for a good alternative to help you deal with the insect right away.
While you obviously can try to stomp it if you are brave enough, your options can get very limited when you have to deal with an infestation. Fortunately, there is no need for you to worry. This is because common household items such as baking soda, might be able to give you an effective helping hand.
Baking soda is commonly used at home for making pastries, cakes and breads lighter. It is also popularly used for teeth whitening treatments. But recently, people have also been talking about how useful this item is when it comes to making effective roach killing concoctions. So, does baking soda kill roaches?
As a matter of fact, baking soda can be used to kill roaches by the dozen. The common household item can do this by making a reaction inside the roaches’ tummy. Remember, food and water are some of the important things on the roaches’ minds. And by using baking soda, you can use these two against them.
When the roaches ingest the baking soda, its minute granules can stay inside the roach’s stomach in its dormant form. That is until the roach will look for water and start drinking. As soon as the water hits the soda granules, the baking soda will develop a chemical reaction that results in the formation of gas.
The gas will slowly accumulate inside the roach’s stomach. Unfortunately for the cockroach, these insects cannot pass gas freely. This means that the stomach will continue to expand until it bursts and ultimately kills the pest. However, there is an issue. That is roaches do not actually eat this item.
So you can entice the roach to ingest the baking soda, you will have to add a food item that is very attractive to these insects. In most cases, homeowners will try to add sugar since a lot of roaches are attracted to the aroma and flavor of this substance. This can allow you to kill several roaches at a time.
Sugar can also be used to hide the odor of baking soda as well as its bitter taste. But if you want to make it a bit more enticing, you can also opt to use flour and even powdered mashed potatoes so that you can attract the roaches by using more substantial or nutritious bait. Just try to avoid mixing it with liquids.
You can then put the mixture into small dishes or plastic containers on areas where you will typically find the roaches. You can also put another dish filled with water so that you will not have to wait long for the chemical reaction and eventually the roach will die from a very bad case of tummy ache.
One of the benefits of using baking soda is the fact that unlike most poisoned baits and insecticides, the baking soda is not actually toxic to humans. This means that you can safely use it without worrying if it will cause irritations. Of course, you should still make sure that it is not ingested by anyone else.
Another benefit of using baking soda is that it is relatively cheap and you can make it anytime especially if you always keep baking soda in your pantry. And since roaches eat dead roaches, they can also eat the baking soda inside the other roaches. This will ensure that more roaches will die in just one feeding.
Baking soda is a popular product that is typically used to put air into pastries and breads. But more than just for cooking, this common household item is actually one of many that can be used to help you kill roaches. It can kill roaches by producing gas which will slowly expand the roach’s tummy until it bursts.
Roaches however, are not known to eat baking soda on its own. To help you use the baking soda properly, you will need to combine it with other ingredients such as flour or sugar in order to make a roach bait that can slowly kill them over time. You can put this in areas where roaches typically forage.
