Unfortunately, it is not as easy as it sounds. In some cases, you will have to ask permission from the authorities so you won’t be in trouble with the law. But in most cases, you will have to find a way how you can possibly remove a tree that will probably weigh a ton or more.
In order to know how much a tree weighs, you need to use a bit of mathematics. You need to factor-in the approximate height of the tree, the diameter and its specie. You can get the diameter by putting a tape measure around the tree and by dividing it by pi.

The algorithm will not just include the weight of the tree that is above ground, but it can also include the weight of its roots, which comprises 20% of the overall weight of the tree.

Depending on what type of tree you are dealing with and depending on how big it is, the weight of a single tree can range from a ton to 50 tons or more. Hardwood trees for example are known to be very heavy. As a matter of fact, full-sized hardwood trees can easily exceed 50 tons.
To help you understand better, an 80-foot hardwood tree with a 24-inch diameter can weigh as much as 20,000 pounds while a 50-foot pine tree with a 12-inch diameter will only weigh as much as 2,000. That is how significant the weight difference is between a hardwood tree and a softwood tree.
If you can’t use the algorithm and you don’t know the specie of the tree, you can also estimate the weight of hardwood trees using its diameter or circumference. For example, calculations have shown that hardwood trees with a diameter of 12 inches or a circumference of 38 inches will weigh 0.75 tons.
Hardwood trees with a 14-inch diameter on the other hand, will weigh 1 ton. Larger hardwood trees that are around 24 inches in diameter can weigh as much as 3.55 tons while mature hardwood trees that already have 36 inches in diameter or 113 inches in circumference can weigh a whopping 8.21 tons.
Although these weights are only rough estimates, it is by far the easiest way for you to get the weight of a tree. You will only need to get a measuring tape and then refer it to a prepared table that can provide you with the weight of a tree based on its diameter or circumference.
Different trees will weigh differently even though they have the same height or diameter. This is because each tree species are made up differently from each other. The best way for you to get the weight of a tree is by knowing its height, diameter, specie and by using the algorithm.
Although the algorithm will not be able to provide you with the actual weight, it can provide you with a realistic and almost accurate estimate of the tree’s weight including the weight of the roots. Using it is necessary especially if you are planning to remove the tree using heavy equipment and machinery.
If you lack the necessary information, you can simply use the tree’s diameter so you can check its corresponding weight estimate in a prepared table. Doing so can help you provide as much information as possible to service providers who can help you get rid of the problem trees in your property.
