Swimming pools need to be maintained properly. Aside from making sure that its plaster does not have any cracks or chips, you need to check the level of the chemicals on the pool on a regular basis. So you and your family can use the pool safely, you need to make sure that it is free from contaminants.
A wide array of microorganism can thrive in water. While most of the time, these will not cause any problems, some bacteria and single-celled parasites can cause harm if they get into your eyes or if they are accidentally ingested while you are playing in the swimming pool.
In order to keep the swimming pool clean, you will have to use enough chlorine so you can eliminate the microbes. However, you should keep in mind that it is very important to make sure that you avoid adding too much chlorine. Here’s what you need to do to lower chlorine levels if they get too high:
This will be used so you will know exactly how much chlorine is in the pool. This will help you know whether you have too much or too little of it and also to know if the pool is safe enough to swim in.
If you do not have a testing kit, some will suggest that you try to smell the water or swim in it. I however, will not recommend that you do this simply because testing it on your own can be dangerous. Having too much chlorine will cause eye irritations and breathing difficulties.
You will have to keep people off the pool if you suspect that it has too much chlorine. You can purchase plastic warning signage that will tell people that the pool is temporarily off limits. If you do not have one, you can try to cordon the pool with a rope or you can use pen and paper to make one.
this might be able to reduce the amount of chlorine in the pool. You will need to use a filter that uses zeolite. If zeolite is not available, you can try to use one that has diatomaceous earth. If you do not have it, just make sure that the pool is exposed to sunlight.
You can add more water to dilute the chlorine further. Depending on how high the chlorine content is, you will have to add hundreds or thousands of gallons of water. You can order water in bulk or turn on the pump so you can add well water into the swimming pool.
This will help you drain or reduce the amount of water that is already in the swimming pool. If you do not have this, you can use a vacuum or pump, you can also use an ordinary hose to siphon the water out of the pool.
This will be used when the chlorine levels are significantly high. You can opt to buy sodium thiosulfate or hydrogen peroxide to help lower the chlorine levels. If you none of these chemicals are readily available, you can use sunlight in the morning and UV lamps at night instead.
If the pool smells differently, if you have not tested it recently or if the water is too irritating on your eyes, you need to check the chlorine levels in the swimming pool. Use a chlorine testing kit to see how much chlorine is in the water. The normal range should only be 1- 3 parts per million.
Chlorine levels above 3 ppm will cause discomfort while levels that are 8 - 10 ppm will cause serious health problems. No one should try to swim in a pool that has a too high chlorine level. As soon as you know that the chlorine level is high, place the warning signs or cordon-off the pool area.
You should then try to close off the chlorine feeder so that it will stop adding more chlorine. You should check if it is in the correct setting and try to see if it is not too big for your swimming pool. You should also stop adding chlorine by removing the chlorinator, chlorine tablet or chlorine floater.
Try to expose the pool water to direct sunlight by removing the covers, the blankets and the toys on the surface. You should also start the pump and filtration as well as the dilution by draining the water by a few feet and then adding more water. You should consider using chlorine-free water.
Buy chlorine neutralizers directly from the pool store and avoid using chemical mixtures that are not prepared specifically for pool use. Depending on what product you buy, calculate how much you need, close the pool depending on how much time is needed and test the water before using it again.
Chlorine is very important when it comes to maintaining the pool water and making sure that it is free from harmful microorganisms. Unfortunately, miscalculations and the lack of experience can easily make the pool water unsafe because of the presence of too much chlorine.
So you can make sure that the water is safe and does not contain too much chlorine, you need to test the water regularly. Follow the above steps carefully if the water has high chlorine levels and use chlorine neutralizers only if it is necessary.
