Husqvarna 350 Chainsaw Review: Discontinued But Capable

There is a long list of things that probably didn’t need to be invented, but the chainsaw definitely isn’t on that list. Going from sawing and chopping trees and firewood by hand to being able to automate the process was a huge step in the logging and lumber industries, which is why anybody who works with trees often should always have a good chainsaw on hand.

Husqvarna makes some of the better chainsaws on the market, but they can also be a tad bit expensive. For some, the best solution is to buy an older model that’s depreciated in price a bit, but that might not be the best option if you need optimal power and technology. If you’re considering buying the Husqvarna 350 chainsaw, have a look at our review first to find out if there’s a better option out there for you.

What Is a Chainsaw?

When early colonizers of America began populating the country, they had to clear out a lot of forest to make room for their settlements. While logging wasn’t done nearly on the same scale as it is now in the early days of America, it still took an insane amount of effort because all these people had to work with were basic hand tools. If you were felling a tree, you and another person had to grab either side of a two-man saw and work it back and forth until you eventually cut deep enough. This was a lot of work and meant it took a lot longer to cut down trees — until chainsaws were invented.

A chainsaw is essentially an engine that drives a crankshaft, which is attached to gears, which are connected to sprockets — which are covered by the chain. When you rev the engine of your chainsaw, the turning of the gears causes the sprockets to turn and spin the chain along with them. When this tough metal chain is rubbed up against softer wood at a very high rate of speed, it slices right through it and gives us the classic chainsaw effect that revolutionized cutting wood so many years ago.

What Is the Husqvarna 350?

Husqvarna is a Swedish manufacturer of all types of high-quality stuff, including both motorcycles and chainsaws. As a matter of fact, the company got its start all the way back in 1689 as a rifle factory in Sweden, which lasted all the way up until 1989. The first Husqvarna motorcycle was made in 1903, giving rise to a new era of manufacturing. It didn’t start making chainsaws until 1959 when the demand for motorcycles started to decline a bit, but it didn’t take long before Husqvarna was considered one of the top chainsaw manufacturers among professionals everywhere. That legacy has continued all the way up until now.

The Husqvarna 350 appears to have been released in 2003 alongside the 340 and 345, so it’s far from the newest model. Because of this, you’ll also have a difficult time finding one that’s still under warranty, although that’s not really an issue because you’ll have to find this chainsaw used anyway. Although it’s a bit older, this saw is designed as a medium- to high-power model capable of handling just about any standard user’s needs, as well as meeting some professional requirements. If you’re going to invest in this chainsaw, keep in mind that you might have to do a bit of maintenance and repair to get it in its best shape.

Husqvarna 350 Specifications

Fuel and Lubrication chain

You know the Husqvarna 350 is a bit of an older model, but that doesn’t say anything about its actual power or features. Although it’s a bit hard to find solid information about this chainsaw, we did our best to compile a list of all the specs and features of the 350 to help you decide if it’s the right purchase for you. Later on, we’ll compare a couple of similar models so you can see if one of those fits your needs better. Having said that, here’s what this option has to offer.

husqvarna 350 engine

Driving the Husqvarna 350 chainsaw is a 49.4-cc engine with a 44-millimeter cylinder bore and 32-millimeter stroke. This engine is capable of reaching speeds of up to 13,000 RPM, which is more than enough for pretty much anything you’re going to do at home.

The only time you might run into some trouble is with particularly heavy cutting jobs where you’d rather have a more powerful engine, but that’s not going to be a problem unless you’re a professional doing your own work at home, and you’re probably not interested in buying a saw like this if that’s the case. While many Husqvarna chainsaws don’t get a manufacturer rating for horsepower, the 350 is rated at 3.1 HP.

Ignition chain

The ignition in the Husqvarna 350 is manufactured by a company called SEM, one of the largest suppliers of ignition systems in the entire world. This is a good sign that you’re getting a quality ignition system with the 350 chainsaw, even if it is on the older side. The ignition uses CD technology, which means it can provide consistent, strong spark all the way up to 10,000 RPM. Inductive discharge ignition systems have a harder time running at higher RPM, so they’re not nearly as reliable when it comes to powering a chainsaw that maxes out at 13,000 RPM.

NGK BPMR7A standard spark plugs were used in the Husqvarna 350 chainsaw. They are designed to operate at higher heat, resist buildup, improve heat transfer and last longer in general. The best part is that you can pick up a new NGK BPMR7A spark plug from Amazon for about $4.50, so replacing one is simple.

Fuel and Lubrication

Fuel and Lubrication chain

As far as the fuel and lubrication system in the 350 goes, Husqvarna went with a Zama C3-EL18 carburetor that’s designed to make sure your engine is always getting the right fuel mixture. A 0.53-pint oil tank with an automatic oil pump helps your chainsaw stay lubricated no matter what, which is probably the biggest part of keeping it in working order for a long time.

One really nice quality of the Zama C3-EL18 carburetor is the fact that you can find a list of all the parts on Zama’s website, and you can buy used Zama C3-EL18 carburetors for relatively cheap online. If you have carb problems with your Husqvarna 350 chainsaw, all you need to do is buy a new carburetor or rebuild yours with parts from Zama and you’re good to go.

Chain and Bar

husqvarna 350 specs

The Husqvarna 350 features a 13-inch bar, which is a bit short for bigger jobs but gets the job done if you’re only looking to cut smaller trees. However, Husqvarna’s recommended bar length for this model is 13 to 20 inches, so you can buy a compatible bar that’s a bit longer and swap it out if you need more length. Keep in mind that you may also need to put a new chain on your chainsaw if you upgrade the bar.

The Husqvarna 350 chainsaw has a 17.3-meters-per-second chain designed for 7-tooth sprockets with a drive link thickness of 0.5 inches and a pitch of 0.325 inches. Again, this chain will get the job done just fine when it comes to smaller trees, but you might have some complaints when doing larger jobs.

When it comes to the warranty on the Husqvarna 350, we have some bad news: you’re not going to get one. This chainsaw is more than 10 years old, and you’ll probably only find used ones from resellers online, none of which will still be under warranty. If you do need your 350 serviced, you can try to get in touch with Husqvarna tech support to figure out if they can help you in any way. Aside from this, your best bet is to simply research online and try to do repairs yourself if you have to.

Because this model is so old, you pretty much have to buy one from somebody who’s been using it for years. Because of this, there’s no way to say how much you’re going to spend on a Husqvarna 350 chainsaw, except to say that it will probably cost you somewhere in the realm of $200 to $400. Of course, the price will depend on the condition of the chainsaw, who the reseller is and more, so that muddies things even more.

This isn’t a great deal in terms of what you can get for the same price nowadays. You can find brand new options with similar specs for less than $500, so there really is no reason to choose a Husqvarna 350 chainsaw unless you find one for a really low price and that’s all the money you have to spend.

How the Husqvarna 350 Compares

If you’re looking for an ultra-cheap tool and you find the 350 used for $150, it might not be a bad investment. However, there are a lot of newer saws on the market with similar specs that you can buy for slightly more than the $200-to-$300 price range you’ll find Husqvarna 350 chainsaws for on eBay. Here are some of the comparable but more modern alternatives you might consider buying instead of this model.

  • Carb and spark plugs can be easily replaced

  • Fairly small 13-inch ba
  • Outdated
  • No warranty

Final Thoughts: Outdated but Somewhat Viable

old chainsaw

We’re going to be brutally honest with you: you probably don’t want to buy the Husqvarna 350. It’s a fairly old chainsaw and the warranty won’t apply anymore, so you’re essentially making an investment in outdated technology. On top of that, it’s not a particularly cheap investment.

That being said, if you find a great deal on this model and are just looking for something basic for cutting up small firewood, the Husqvarna 350 will definitely get the job done. This chainsaw has enough power for basic jobs, it’s the bar length and product support that are really lacking. As long as you don’t mind doing some of your own repair work.
